Many people do not realize exactly what snorkeling actually is. They often confuse snorkeling with scuba diving. Snorkeling consists of swimming with a mask, a pair of fins and a tube known as a snorkel, which permits you to submerge your face under the water while still being able to breath. Snorkeling tends to differ from scuba diving in that it does not require the use of air tanks, regulators nor any of the other expensive equipment. Scuba diving permits the diver to breathe while submerged under the water whereas snorkeling permits you to breath with your face under the waters surface while you are swimming topside. Lastly, snorkeling does not require any sort of official certification as found with its cousin scuba diving.

Snorkeling is a very safe water sport that just about anyone may participate in. Although it is not necessary that you be an Olympic swimmer, we would recommend that the swimmer feel comfortable in and around the water as well as possessing a little experience in pool swimming. It would not hurt in the least if the potential snorkeler were to spend a little time at regularly populated snorkel locations.

Learning to snorkel will offer a trip to a planet you never knew existed. Lost ship wrecks, swaying coral of all shapes and sizes and fish that you’d rather take a snap shot of then eat. If you do it up right, it will also introduce you to new people, places and relaxing traditions that are in place. Getting started can be as easy as buying a mask and swim fins, but to really get going ask your local sporting goods associate about snorkeling locations and a lesson or two.

Remarkable and colorful snorkeling spots dot the globe with just about all having a beautiful setting to go along with them. What is truly beautiful, however, is what lies below the surface. There are color combinations that you would never have thought of, living animals that bear no resemblance to the two or four legged beasts above and a certain freedom from the rigors of gravity. Oddly enough, the more relaxed you are when snorkeling the easier it becomes.
